Summer of Love 50th Anniversary celebration at Retro Reverb, San Francisco oldies rock & soul dance party

Retro Reverb, San Francisco oldies rock & soul dance party, celebrates the Summer of Love 50th Anniversary at its next event on Friday, June 30, 2017, at the Cat Club, located at 1190 Folsom Street. Retro Reverb debuted in fall 2016, and quickly built a following of music and nightlife fans young and old who appreciate the vintage rock and soul sounds of the 1950s and 1960s. At its first upcoming event during the summer months, Retro Reverb joins the citywide celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the phenomenon known as the Summer of Love, when youth counterculture impacted music and society at large in 1967, particularly in San Francisco, and around the nation and the world. San Francisco was especially known as a focal point of the hippie look and lifestyle; the term itself was popularized by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen, and the local Human Be-In advanced the hippie wave.

At the Retro Reverb Summer of Love Anniversary celebration, DJs will recreate the music and vibes of the period, playing songs from the pivotal year of 1967 and the late 1960s. DJ Wendi, known for Wendi's Rockin' 60s Party at Burning Man, is joined by DJ Andy T, veteran of local clubs and parties like The Stud, CW Saloon, DNA Lounge, and New Wave City. Special guest set is by Dennis Willis who will present a 10@10 salute to 1967 at 10pm. Dennis is producer and host of the current incarnation of the 10@10 radio show, the beloved program identified with San Francisco’s KFOG Radio, and now revived by the Soundwaves media brand [soundwavestv.com.]

Also at the Retro Reverb Summer of Love Anniversary celebration, patrons are encouraged to dress up and enter a contest for Best Hippie outfit. Look groovy and you might win tickets to see the Flamin’ Groovies, the legendary rock act founded in 1965 in San Francisco, in concert at the Chapel on July 29. Try just a little bit harder and you could win tickets to the A.C.T. production of the hit concert musical “A Night with Janis Joplin,” now extended through July 9.

As the song says, “if you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair,” but for those who forget their flowers, Retro Reverb will have some to adorn their locks. Projections will show psychedelic visuals and images from the Summer of Love.

In the two room layout of the Cat Club, the front room will be Retro Reverb’s signature Oldies Blowout with DJs (and Retro Reverb producers) Shindog of New Wave City, and Jimmy B spinning Rock n Roll and R&B from the 50s & 60s to keep the dance floor spinning. Projections will show many clips of the original artists performing their songs, and other vintage images and scenes from the era and youth culture.
